I believe her characterizations are correct but she gets it wrong when she devalues the significance of nature. I believe there is nothing.

Oates asks this rhetorical question in order to show her reader that a relationship with Nature as a teacher is foolish because in the end it is nature that kills us all. This is also ironic because many people look to Nature the true meaning of life while in actuality they are.
